I'm excited to announce that I'll be releasing a new novel in July 2019. Read more about Promises, a coming of age/mystery novel based in Melbourne, below:
Paddy Cowen had a troubled childhood. The night he found out his mother had cancer, scared and confused, he made a promise …Entering Year Twelve, all Paddy wants is to get through the year with a happy ending. But when Paddy finds his deceased father’s journal, a chain of events is set in motion that will challenge everything he thinks he knows about his life and the people closest to him. While all that most Year Twelves need to think about is school, Paddy will uncover family secrets, experience the hardest loss, and have his will to keep a promise put to the ultimate test.
I first started work on Promises in 2017, when I wrote a first draft, and then shelved the book and wrote a few more drafts of other novels (this is how I tend to work, but that's a story for another time). After almost a year, I delved back into the book, and began the editing process, during which time I made some massive changes, and eventually got the book into decent shape.
Late 2018, I got an offer from Shooting Star Press to publish the book, and am now stoked to be able to share that with you.
Now, as much or more than ever, Year Twelve in Australia entails an immense amount of pressure. I remember this from when I completed school, and it seems little has changed. Everyone around you makes you feel as though the sky will fall if you don't succeed in your quest to gain the ATAR you're after, even if you haven't the slightest clue of what you want to do with your life after school.
For Paddy, this is no different, but before the year is out for him, his ATAR will be the last thing he is worried about. Paddy will fall in love, battle mental illness and the pain of his past, deal with bullying, family secrets and the absence of a father he has never known, the immense pain of loss, and have his will to keep a promise put to the ultimate test. Through it all he will learn what is truly important in life and the relationships we have. He will confront his past, face his fears, and enter adulthood with a deeper understanding of himself.
Set against the eclectic backdrop of modern Melbourne, Promises examines relationships, culture, growing up, and the choices we make.
